Srimathy Mohan

Founder/Director

Srimathy Mohan began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of ten under the eminent Guru Padmasri Prof. Sudharani Raghunatha at Shree Bharatalaya, Chennai. She has been demonstrating her mastery of the art through creative Bharatanatyam programs both in India and in the United States. In 2000, Srimathy Mohan founded her Bharatanatyam school, Silambam Phoenix, in alliance with Shree Bharatalaya.

Performances by Dr. Mohan along with Silambam Phoenix students include Margam (2004), Skāndam (2006), Swagatam Krishna (2010), Rasamanjari (2010), Samarpanam (2012), Shivanandlahari (2014), Sanmarga (2016), Yatra (2018), Sarvagnya (2022), and Dasamahavidya (2022), Dr. Mohan was a principal dancer in Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum (2007) and The Milestones Tour (2022), performed by a group of accomplished Bharatalaya dancers, receiving critical acclaim.

Silambam Phoenix is especially proud of Vajra Vaibhavam, a two part documentation of Guru Prof. Sudharani Ragupathy’s legendary dance to celebrate her 75 years in the field of dance.

Srimathy’s Bharatnatyam performances have been fundraisers for addressing social causes including illiteracy, food insecurity, women empowerment and children’s health and wellness. Silambam has supported several local and international non-profit organizations with these fundraisers.

Silambam Phoenix trains students in the Thanjavur tradition by practicing structured and disciplined dance teaching methods designed and followed at Shree Bharatanalayh, a premier fine arts institution in Chennai. India. This was founded by Prof. Sudharani Raghunatha and served by Padma Bhushan (Late) Vidwan Madurai N. Krishnan as Director Trustee. This approach is rooted in imparting holistic learning in Bharatanatyam and art forms that are essential for every Bharatanatyam artist. The goal of Silambam is to preserve the art form by preparing the youth, through dance, to live a confident and artistically fulfilling life. Silambam is unique in that it is a part of a network of dance schools around the world led by alumni from Shree Bharatalaya.

Besides Bharatanatyam, Srimathy Mohan has training in Carnatic vocal music from Shree Bharatalaya and from Kalakad Sri S. Mahadevan. An engineer and mathematician by training, she holds a B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Alabama, an M.S. in Operation Research from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Montreal. At present, Srimathy Mohan is an emeritus professor of Supply Chain management at Arizona State University.
